Forged trailer torsion arm axles are used in a variety of towable applications. They are easily recognizable by their production run and component lot number. The main component of the torsion axle is the torsion arm, which is forged in a closed die process.
This adds strength and durability to the torsion arm, which twists back and forth throughout its lifecycle.
Torsion bars reached their peak popularity in mass-production road cars in the early 20th century. At the same time, unitary construction was becoming the norm for cars, allowing torsion bars to be mounted to the reinforced central structure. This design also allowed cars to be equipped with independent front suspension using coil springs, but required strong front turrets.
Torsion axles provide independent wheel suspension, less road vibration, and lower maintenance costs compared to traditional leaf spring axles. These axles can support weights of up to 10,000 pounds and are often bolted directly to the trailer's frame.
