Having drive sprockets on the gathering chains slows the chain speed down
The increased speed of the gathering chain can improve row unit capacity, travel speeds, and reduce trash intake. One such dependent drive system is outlined in U.S. Pat. No. 3,462,928. It uses an eight-tooth sprocket that drives stalk rolls and endless gathering chains. The eight-tooth sprocket appears to be the most commonly used in John Deere dependent drive systems.By reducing the speed of the gathering chain, a farmer can reduce stalk shear and increase ground-speed operations. This will result in improved ear separation and threshing efficiencies. For optimal harvest performance, the initial speed of the gathering chain should be around 55 RPM. If butt shelling occurs, slow down the speed of the chain until the stalks are pushed forward.
Another way to reduce the amount of corn stalk shear is by installing a smaller drive sprocket on the gathering chain. This
sprocket will be installed on the row unit or dependent drive system. Having smaller drive sprockets on the gathering chains slows down the speed of the chain, allowing the rest of the corn head to continue working normally.
