Characteristic
There are several different types of connecting rods used on agricultural machinery, from standard models to high performance engines. In addition to the standard steel and stainless steel versions, rods may also be made with a smooth edge or shot peened to create compressive surface stresses that prevent crack initiation. During maintenance, connecting rods are sometimes balanced so that both sides are the same weight. Additionally, they are often replaced with new rods. In addition to replacing the entire connecting rod, connecting rods may be cracked or cut into two pieces to ensure a precision fit around the big end bearing shell.
Master-and-slave connecting rods
One type of connecting rod that is commonly used in an agricultural engine is called master-and-slave. This type of rod is used on V engines where the strokes of the slave piston are longer than the master piston's. Master-and-slave connecting rods are typically used in the BCS 622 Combine. While most road cars share a single crank journal, radial engines require separate connecting rods for each cylinder.
The BCS 622 Combine uses a master-and-slave connecting rod system to prevent piston damage and enhance engine performance. These rods feature a single piston attached directly to the crankshaft. The slave piston's stroke is larger than the master piston's, increasing engine vibration in a V-type engine. Master-and-slave connecting rods are made of steel alloy, aluminum, and nickel. These materials are less expensive than steel but stronger than cast rods.
Rolling-element bearings
Combination rolling-element bearings are one of the most common types of bearings in machinery. This type of bearing uses two balls as bearing elements, which rotate in opposite directions. These balls also have an increased surface area, which reduces wear and tear on the parts. They are difficult to lubricate because of their large journal, but they are a more cost-effective choice for high-speed applications.
Powder metallurgy
The process of powder metallurgy used to make the connecting rod of a BCS 622 combine is known as the "powder forging" process. The process involves the application of high-tech base powders with specific alloying elements, followed by melting, atomizing, and annealing. After this process, materials are compacted under tremendous pressure and undergo a sintering stage, where high temperatures alter the structure of the metal. The finished product is then hot-forged under high-pressure using a 750-ton press. The design and analysis of connecting rods play a significant role in improving their quality and performance. The technique of powder metallurgy allows for high precision control in shape, weight, and size. Additionally, it minimizes material waste and machining costs. In addition, the connecting rods can be produced with low weight and high strength-to-weight ratio, while remaining free of defects.
Embossed position number
An Embossed position number is an important component of a connecting rod. It allows the operator to easily identify which component of the connecting rod is failing. The positioning number is usually positioned at the 6 o'clock position of the rod's pin bore. If the position number is not displayed on the connecting rod, the operator should contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.
